Catholic elementary schools in the archdiocese opened on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Marking the occasion at the Academy of St. Paul and St. Ann in East Harlem was Michael Deegan, superintendent of schools for the archdiocese, who greeted students and parents at morning drop-off. Deegan gets down to eye level with kindergartener Isaac Verdugo and his sister, Josmary, a third-grader. Dad Kevin Royall squares away first-day paperwork for his daughter, Zuri. Principal John-Paul Barnaba greets parents and students with an elbow bump.
