Five Archdiocesan Priests Retire

Five priests of the archdiocese have retired, the Cardinal’s Office announced. The retirements were effective July 1, except for one noted below.  

Father Edmund Burke had served since 2013 as administrator of St. Peter’s, Rosendale. In Kingston, he served as pastor of St. Peter, 2010-2012, and pastor of St. Mary and Holy Name, 1994-2012. He served as parochial vicar of St. Mary’s, Washingtonville, 2012-2013; St. Paul, Congers, 1992-1994; and St. Joseph, Croton Falls, 1984-1992. At Salesian High School, New Rochelle, he was financial administrator, 1978-1984, and teacher, 1977-1978. He served as weekend assistant at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pelham Manor, 1977-1984. He was ordained for the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1977, and was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1990.

Msgr. J. Christopher Maloney retired June 1 after serving since 2015 as administrator of St. John the Baptist-Most Holy Trinity, Yonkers. He served as pastor of St. John the Baptist, Yonkers, 2003-2015, and Notre Dame, Manhattan, 1988-2003. He was priest secretary to Cardinal John O’Connor, 1985-1988. He served on the faculty of Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx, 1977-1985; Archbishop Stepinac High School, White Plains, 1968-1977; and John S. Burke Catholic High School, Goshen, 1967-1968. He was parochial vicar of St. Vito’s, Mamaroneck, 1967. He was ordained in Rome in 1966 and named a monsignor in 1990.

Father Alfredo Monteiro served at Our Lady of Victory-Sacred Heart, Mount Vernon, as administrator, 2020-2022, and pastor, 2015-2020. He served as dean of the Westchester Sound Shore Deanery, 2016-2021. He was temporary administrator of Sacred Heart, Mount Vernon, 2012-2015, and served at St. Mary’s, Mount Vernon, as pastor, 2012, and administrator, 2011-2012. He served as parochial vicar of St. Lawrence O’Toole, Brewster, 2009-2011; St. Gabriel, New Rochelle, 2003-2006; and St. Teresa’s, Manhattan, 1995-2003. He also was chaplain at Sound Shore Hospital, New Rochelle. Ordained in India in 1973, he was incardinated into the archdiocese in 2010.

Father John Vigilanti retired as administrator of Magdalene in Sleepy Hollow, a position he held since 2016. He was president of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, the Bronx, 2008-2016; and pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Bronx, 1994-1995. He was parochial vicar of St. Bartholomew, Yonkers, 1975-1980; St. Thomas of Canterbury, Cornwall-on-Hudson, 1972-1975; and St. James the Apostle, Carmel, 1972. He served in various roles for the Metropolitan Tribunal, and as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was ordained in 1972.

Father Evangelio Suaybaguio served as parochial vicar of St. Joseph-St. Thomas-St. John Neumann, Staten Island, 2017-2022, and served in the same role for St. Joseph-St. Thomas, Staten Island, 1988-2017. Ordained in the Philippines in 1975, he was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1998.
