Ryan Boyd allowed three hits and struck out five over seven innings to lead the host John F. Kennedy Catholic Prep baseball team to the program’s first archdiocesan championship with a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School May 22.

Boyd, who walked none, threw 86 pitches, including 68 strikes. In 40 innings this season, the senior has not allowed a run and has 58 strikeouts. He will attend the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, where he will play baseball.

“He’s a strike thrower, he pounds the zone,” said Kennedy Catholic Prep coach Bob Fletcher of his pitcher, who throws in the high 80s. “He worked very hard in the off-season with weights and yoga. He’s bigger and stronger, and you can see the results.”

Kennedy Catholic Prep scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Junior Nick Duryea walked, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Kennedy Catholic Prep joined the CHSAA for the 2013-2014 school year after previously competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Last year, the Gaels suffered a 3-0 loss to St. Joseph by-the-Sea in the archdiocesan title game.

“We were very excited about the win after what happened (in last year’s title game),” Fletcher said.
