Early Childhood

St. Mary’s Little Lambs in Port Jervis raised $1,122 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during a “trikeathon,” a weeklong curriculum and fund-raising program that teaches children riding safety lessons through a series of interactive stories. At the end of the week, the students brought their trikes or riding toys to school to practice the lessons they learned. Officer Scott Robertson of the Port Jervis Police Department assisted with the trikeathon.

Elementary Schools

St. Patrick’s School in Bedford was awarded the 2011 Grant for the Youth Touch Technology Integration System for elementary school students. The grant was awarded on behalf of Goldenrod Research Corporation, which is dedicated to introducing high quality teaching tools in the classroom. The grant provides robotics with closed-circuit cameras and joystick controls for younger students and computer-interfaced technology showcasing the capabilities of hydraulics and pneumatics for older students.

Chappaqua author Barbara Dee recently visited Holy Name of Jesus School in New Rochelle. She discussed her writing career, the value of perseverance and her latest young adult novel, “Trauma Queen,” with the students.

High Schools

Students in the “With Open Arms” club at Salesian High School in New Rochelle raised more than $2,300 for Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Dobbs Ferry. The students participated in Blythedale’s annual walkathon at The Hackley School in Dobbs Ferry to raise the funds. The “With Open Arms” club at Salesian was founded by Mark Schoenstein, a Salesian student who received rehabilitation care at Blythedale that helped him regain mobility after an illness had left him paralyzed.

Msgr. Scanlan High School in the Bronx was the winner in the MSG Varsity/Cablevision’s Power to Learn charity competition. The school was honored for their service this year, which included food and coat drives, knitting for others, and projects focusing on homelessness awareness. The school was awarded $5,000 to donate to a charity of their choice, as well as $1,000 for the school to conduct further fund-raising efforts. The school will be giving the proceeds to the St. Crispin’s Food Pantry in the Bronx, directed by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. Rep. Joseph Crowley was among those attending the ceremony June 20.

Colleges

The College of New Rochelle and Manhattan College in Riverdale were named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement.
