Sister Mary P. Malone, O.P.

Sister Mary P. Malone, O.P., who was a principal at two schools in the archdiocese and also served as president of the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt, died Nov. 8 in the St. Martin de Porres Community at the motherhouse. She was 80.

Sister Mary was principal of St. Nicholas of Tolentine and St. Benedict schools, both in the Bronx, and served as director of adult education for the Archdiocese of New York. She taught at St. Luke’s School, the Bronx, and at schools in Oceanside and Daytona Beach, Fla.

She was formation director for her congregation, parish minister at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Manhattan, and social worker and supervisor of residence services at St. Dominic’s Home, Blauvelt.

Sister Mary served her religious congregation first as a regional coordinator, then as councilor and finally as president. She was later appointed executive director of Marian Woods, an adult care facility and convent in Hartsdale shared by sisters from several congregations.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt in 1960 from St. Luke’s parish, the Bronx.

She held a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Dominican University, Orangeburg, a master’s in adult education from City College, Manhattan, and a master’s in social work from Fordham University. She was formerly known as Sister Arthur Mary.

Sister Mary is survived by her brother, Bob.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 11 at St. Dominic’s Convent, Blauvelt. Burial was in St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery.
