I was appalled to read the editorial titled Pope’s Penitential Pilgrimage (CNY, July 28). The pilgrimage of Pope Francis from Rome to Canada at age 85, to apologize and beg forgiveness to Canada’s Native people. Some 150,000 children were sent to schools run by members of Christian churches and religious communities of priests and nuns between 1870 and 1997. A total of 4,120 children died and several thousand vanished. He also offered a personal apology for the Christian churches’ role in separating families and sending the children to residential schools where many were physically and sexually abused. God bless Pope Francis.
